Pitfalls In Building Relationships, Commitment, And Love - W Is For...

We continue this series suggesting how to avoid many pitfalls in building interpersonal relationships, whether with family, coworkers, friends, or that special someone...

Committed, loving relationships do not just happen. You may know that there is no success secret, no checklist of things to do, and just as important things not to do to make such relationships happen. But we do have many suggestions that focus on potential problems. We center on waffle, whine, and yuppie.

W is for waffle. Waffles are for breakfast, covered with butter and maple syrup, real maple syrup. Don’t waffle, don’t go for margarine and artificial maple syrup. Don’t waffle, come clean. Wash your face after breakfast. And get to the point. A friend of mind loved to employ the word vague as a verb, for example in the phrase to vague around, an excellent synonym for waffling. Don’t vague around. Let people know where you stand. And that should be far from the waffle iron, unless you’re in the kitchen and the pitcher and the batter are near.

W is for whine. When my kids were young I composed a little ditty: “Other people wine and dine, but with my kiddies it’s just Whiinne.” At which point my little daughter inevitably replied, “You’re whhinning.” Now I whine when I realize that those days are long, long gone. What does this have to do with you? Don’t whine. And don’t whinny. Exceptions are allowed for three year olds, thoroughbred or not. As soon as your tone of voice approaches a whine, your chance of being heard may remain, but your chance of convincing anyone virtually disappears. Then you will really have a lot to whine about.

Yuppies look the same the world over.

Y is for yuppie. I don’t know about you, but I’m not wild about yuppies. I wasn’t wild about them when I was young, urban, and professional. To some extent when discussing yuppies we are talking lifestyle issues and of course not everyone agrees. This lifestyle variety is part of the fun of living in our epoch, and what’s wrong with that? What’s wrong with being young, urban, and professional? Absolutely nothing. But yuppieism is really more than these three qualities. Being a yuppie is really about me, me, and me. And there is plenty wrong with that. So in the last analysis, I like yuppies who aren’t yuppies. Yippee.

Are you tired of all this negativity? Take a look at our companion series that accentuates the positive.
